Language ArtsBenchmark Literacy is a comprehensive, research-proven program that empowers teachers with tools for vertically aligned K-6 reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language instruction.
Readers may apply metacognitive strategies to ANY text they read, by visualizing, making connections, or asking themselves questions to increase their understanding; however, the content and organization of certain texts require readers to use specific text-dependent comprehension strategies. Benchmark Literacy builds these strategies so that students can successfully navigate narrative, informational, and opinion/argument texts to analyze the content, learn new information, and develop a rich vocabulary. For phonics and writing we use Fundations In grade one Fundations reinforces the basic skills that were learned in Kindergarten and progresses further into the study of word structure. Teachers should combine Fundations with a wide variety of text experiences, and expose students to poetry, narrative and informational text. By the end of First Grade , students will be able to:
While students work on independent activities in groups, I will meet with students for guided reading. During guided reading, students are instructed using leveled books to teach reading strategies and skills. At this time, students blend sounds together to read fluently and answer questions about what they are reading. We also use poems. listening centers, computer programs and leveled books so students can practice their reading skills, sounds and fluency. Instruction in writing involves modeling how to write and provides daily experiences using writing. In first grade children use sounds to write words and sentences that describe a picture that they draw in their journals. In combination with kid-invented spelling students will be writing using the Benchmark Literacy program books in guided reading and through Fundations. Students will explore all the writing genres. |

Learning Behaviors
The first grade program provides many opportunities for students to continue behaviors such as listening, sharing and taking turns, playing cooperatively with others, completing activities without teacher assistance and taking responsibility for belongings (to name the most significant behaviors).
Motor Skills Development
Students have many opportunities to learn important motor skills. Examples are scissor handling, pencil grip, jumping and skipping. For learning behaviors and social and motor skills, students learn according to their developmental level and are guided through each learning experience to achieve success.
